“Advent” means “coming”and is a four-week celebration in the Christian calendar focused on the birth of Christ. Scripture teaches us that not only that Christ came in his incarnation, but also he will return in the fullness of time. Thus, we anticipate a second Advent even as we remember the first.
When we think of Advent, we almost immediately envision the nativity scene. And that is good. However, the Advent of our Lord is packed with rich meaning and revelation beyond the baby in a manger, as glorious as that is. The Gospel writers go out of their way to to present to us where Christ came from. After all, if the “Advent” is “coming”, from where did he come? Furthermore, the Gospel writers point out that the prophets of the Old Testament declare details about from where the Christ would come. None of these details, therefore, is random or superfluous. Rather, if we study “Where’s He From?” then we will see aspects of Christ’s mission and the gospel itself revealed to us. Why is Micah’s declaration that the Messiah would be born in the insignificant town of Bethlehem good news? How does Jesus following Israel’s storyline of coming out of Egypt give us confidence in Him as our Redeemer? That the Messiah came from God, from Bethlehem, from Egypt, from Ramah, and from Nazareth (and out of Naphtali and Zebulun) delivers good news about who He is and what he came to do.
