Borrowing the title of the third book in “The Apprentice Series” by James Bryan Smith, this semester we’ll consider key dimensions of living as Christ’s people in our everyday lives. As followers of Jesus, our primary calling is to love God with all that we are and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). Every relationship, whether with other believers or with those who are not currently followers of Christ, is the context in which we live out this calling. When we love God and love our neighbors day by day, we contribute to building and have a chance to experience community that reflects the good and beautiful character of God.
How does this happen? What does this look like? We’ll explore these important dimensions of what it means to live as Christ’s people in our everyday lives:
- Rejoice in the gospel – We are captivated by the amazing truth that the big-picture narratives of all of Scripture (and our lives) find their fulfillment in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Create healthy culture – We see ourselves as culture-makers who are part of creating healthy, Christ-reflecting culture in every arena of our lives (home, church, school, work, etc.).
- Practice question-inspiring habits – As Michael Frost describes in Surprise the World, we lead the kinds of lives that evoke questions among unbelievers, giving an opportunity for us to point them to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Tackle tough topics with grace – We approach important and challenging issues of our day—things like racial justice, immigration, and sexuality—with the goal of having the gospel of grace shape our thinking and our dialogue.
